THE EXHIBIT:
By 1867, the Straits Settlements had become important enough to become a Crown Colony with its own Government and administration instead of being administered from India. A series of Indian Postage Stamps and Revenue stamps were overprinted for consideration for use in the Straits Settlements which were to supercede the stamps of India which had until then been used. The essays prepared took two forms. A Crown overprint to emphasise the new status of a Crown Colony; the name of the colony “STRAITS/SETTLEMENTS” in two lines. The number of surviving essays appears to be small and 18 of these are in the collection of Her Majesty the Queen Elizabeth II. There are only 29 other existing essays in private hands, and they are all shown here.
Three key pages showing 27 examples of the Crown and Straits Settlements overprint essays are followed by comprehensive revenue and judicial stamp studies revealing subtle features of different printings and watermark varieties hitherto unrecorded.
皇冠图强调了直辖殖民地新的身份,其名称“STRAITS/SETTLEMENTS”分为二行。
