THE EXHIBIT:
This Exhibit shows the Postal history of Brazil from its beginning to 1874.
It is divided in three main chapters:
1 – The Portuguese Post in Brazil (1606-1829)
2 – The Relations with the British Post (1808-1874)
3 – The Relations with the French Post (1815-1874)
Brazil was a Portuguese Colony since its discovery in 1500 and as a consequence the Portuguese Post was the most important for the Country. In fact in 1808 the Portuguese Court settled in Brazil, running away from the Napoleon invasion in Portugal and stayed in the Country for 14 years.
In spite of the Portuguese domain, there was not one country that was free from the influence of both the British and French Posts and their vessels which dominated the transoceanic trips during the nineteenth century.
This exhibit demonstrates the most representative pieces of the Brazilian Postal History. Most of the pieces are not only important for their philatelic value but also their historic aspect.
