THE EXHIBIT:
The world’s first official airmail was carried in India on February 18, 1911, from Allahabad to Naini, by Monsieur Henry Pequet. After the great war of 1914, which hampered further trials and survey, the route testing flights were resumed by the Royal Air Force and Imperial Airways between U.K.-Cairo-Baghdad-India and onwards to Australia, Indo-China and Far east. India was finally linked to U.K. by a weekly airmail service in 1929. Due to its geographical location and political importance, India emerged as a major aviation hub. It was one of the earliest country in the world to issue Airmail stamps (1929) and also the first to introduce Airmail Postcard Service between India and England during July 1931.
The exhibit illustrates the origin, experimental beginnings growth and development of regular service, both domestic and international (to, from or transiting India), during its first 25 years.
The structure follows a chronological pattern in a geographical setting with an emphasis on Empire routes. The Pioneer period is extended to 1920 to enable adequate coverage.
The analysis of shown items is based on study of published and unpublished Aerophilatelic and postal history literature.
