THE EXHIBIT:
The exhibit covers the 15 cent stamp of the Lombardy-Venetia Kingdom, the most populated and valuable region of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. It was released on 1 June 1850 together with other four stamps, in an elegant red colour that was kept, in different shades, through the years, till 31 December 1858, when it went out of use. It was the most used stamp as it was intended for the biggest volume of mail, namely that carried within the first distance; furthermore it was often used for forming rates of greater amount. This great demand called for frequent reprints: as the printing plates deteriorated because of usage, paper was improved because of echnology development over the years. Hence, it became inevitably the most intriguing and studied stamp of Lombardy-Venetia.
The exhibit presents the most important aspects of this stamp through the studies of the different plates and the various types of paper. It includes the first and last day of usage on cover as well as the St Andrew’s crosses in different positions, the types and shades that started the progressive numbering classification, errors and printing varieties: recurrent or occasional ones. This development is supported by mint and used stamps, stripes, blocks up to the largest franking known for this stamp.
The exhibit shows a large number of rates and multiples as well as the feasible frankings , in two, three and four colours, the usage within and outside the border of Lombardy-Venetia, also in combinations with Austrian stamps, successful and unsuccessful frauds, frankings supplemented by revenue stamps, fiscal usages, and imitations for cheating the postal service like the forgeries of Milan and Verona, as well as the usage, in the period of tolerance, with stamps of the second issue.
The exhibit is completed and adorned by the review of the systems of cancellations in use at that time, including rare and fancy postmarks and colours as well as pen cancellations.
